Roaming in Rome, Italy!

While living in Rome for a lifetime would be ideal, many people only have a short time in the city. It's hard to squeeze an entire city's history and architecture into 24 hours, but you can see some of the most important highlights.

The city is easily walkable, the locals are friendly and helpful, and the food is decadent and fresh. Here we've broken down your exciting day in Rome into four different parts.

Morning

The Spanish Steps in Rome

First, grab a croissant and a cappuccino in a local cafe, then begin your morning marveling at the Spanish Steps.  A good way to cover many attractions is with a walking tour of Rome. You will learn about the history while seeing major landmarks such as the giant Pantheon, the beautiful white Spanish Steps, Bernini’s Fountain of the Four Rivers and the famous Trevi Fountain (throw a coin in!) all while walking through some of the most prominent piazzas in the city.

Noon

The Colosseum in Rome

After your stroll through the city, stop by a restaurant for some local cuisine (the pizza is phenomenal). Then, walk to the Colosseum or 'il Colosseo' in the center of the city. Standing at 157 feet tall, words or pictures cannot even begin to describe this massive marvel. It was built in A.D. 70-80 and since then many gladiators, lions, and even battleships have fought in this giant amphitheater.

A private tour of the Colosseum is the easy way to skip the very long line at the entrance and get into the rarely seen Hypogeum (the underbelly of the Colosseum where prisoners were kept and gladiators prepared to fight). Being able to look up from below to where the spectators once sat is awe inspiring.

Afternoon

Vatican Museum

Next, try some gelato as a treat on the way to the Vatican. Many people come all the way to Rome to see Vatican City and its museums (and possibly catch a glimpse of the Pope). The Vatican holds some of the most famous pieces of artwork that you can find in all of Italy. The artifacts, paintings, tapestries, and statues that reside here are one-of-a-kind and need to be seen up close and personal. The Sistine Chapel’s deep blue painted walls are not something you could capture in a photo - which is okay since you can't take pictures! With lines wrapping around the city's walls to enter, a private tour will let you skip those lines and take you through the Vatican museums as well as the rarely visited Golden Room.

Dusk

St. Peter's Basilica at Night in Rome

As dusk falls, Rome takes on a different, but beautiful light. If you’re still in Rome during the evening, then stop into a local cafe and enjoy some Roman pasta. The Cacio e Pepe (basically, pecorino and pepper sauce over spaghetti) and the Pasta alla Carbonara (pancetta, egg, and pecorino) are both delicious. After which, you can enjoy a night tour through the city. Some of Rome’s attractions are even more beautiful at night. The Trevi Fountain changes into a beautiful (less hectic) place when night falls and the lights on St. Peter’s Basilica are an amazing sight to see as well.

We do hope you get to spend more than one day here because Rome is a city like no other! But by breaking down your day with these major attractions, you will get the best experience possible out of your 24 hours.
