Bhaktapur Durbar Square
Mt. Manaslu is the world's eighth highest mountain, reaching 8156 meters above sea level. It is a restricted trekking area that requires special permits, which were first officially offered in 1991, and is becoming a very popular trekking destination these days. Trek to Manaslu begins with a long drive from Kathmandu to Arughat, which is a fascinating town full of mixed cultures, caste groups, and ethnic groups. Manaslu trek is geographically spectacular and culturally fascinating. The Manaslu trail leads you through Budi Gandaki valley towards the top of Larkya La and drops down to the Manang district. There is a hot spring along the route where you can enjoy a refreshing hot bath. The people along the way are largely Tibetan Buddhists who settled here in the early 1600s.
The Larkya La pass is the most dramatic pass over the Himalayas. Manaslu trekking traverses a large elevation range, coming from the lower valley before climbing to high Himalayan passes. There are very basic tea houses, along with basic accommodations and basic foods available on this route, so we will have to prepare for that. After the pass, the trail drops down to Dharapani, which is en route to the Annapurna Circuit, then ends in Besisahar from which we will drive back to Kathmandu.
Max Elevation : 5,213m above sea level.
Trip Route : Kathmandu-Arughat-Jagat-Samagaon-Bimtang-Dharapani-Besisahar-Kathmandu.

The ‘Upper Mustang’, popularly identified as the Last Forbidden Kingdom, lies immediately north of the main Himalayan range of Nepal at the average altitude of 4000m. This sacred terrain situated in the rain shadow of Dhaulagiri occupies the northern two-thirds of Mustang district of Dhaulagiri zone. Starting from Kaagbeni (south), this desolate valley in the Trans-Himalayan area extends till the Tibetan border (north). It’s ironical that the name given to this arid region beyond the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massif is ‘Mustang’, the literal meaning of which is “Fertile Land”. This former Kingdom of Lo sharing a part of Tibetan plateau was made accessible to tourists only since the year 1992. Upper Mustang is also known as the capital of the former Kingdom of Lo Manthang.
The Upper Mustang trek allows you to experience the arid and dry desert-like landscape, weather-beaten cliffs, colorful rocks, moraine valley, deep gorges, snow-crested peaks, glaciers, alpine valleys, barren ridges and century old cave residing higher up in the rocks. This Upper Mustang hike also renders an opportunity to experience the grand view of Annapurna, Nilgiri, and Dhaulagiri while standing on the various passes en route that ranges from 3000m to 4000m. This steep, rocky Upper Mustang trekking trail is also said to have been one of the major trade routes, used by salt caravans while crossing the Himalayas between Tibet and Nepal. Moreover, planning Upper Mustang walk also offers a one time opportunity to spot fortresses, palaces and cave hermitages, the scenery of the Tibetan plateau and Kali Gandaki, the deepest gorge in the world.
Nevertheless, this trip to Upper Mustang not only offers geographical beauty but also introduces you to the old Buddhist Kingdom of Mustang called Lo where people still follow Tibetan Buddhism and pure Tibetan Buddhist culture, language and architectures that have remained unchanged since the 14th century. You can spot Tibetan style village comprising of whitewashed houses tucked with firewood on the roof. You will also be greeted with a number of colorful village monasteries (Lo Gekar monastery built in the 8th century by famous Tibetan magician Guru Rinpoche and Thungchen Gompa built in the 15th century) and other ancient palaces along with the primordial society that has remained unaffected by transformation for centuries. If you are lucky, a visit to the royal palace situated in the city square of Lo Manthang offers exceptional opportunity to meet Lo Manthang’s former King, Jigme Dorjee Palbar Bista, who lost his title in 2008 after Nepal became a republic nation, and his family that is still highly respected by locals.
Another interesting thing about the trek to Upper Mustang is the opportunity to get closer to the tradition and culture of people belonging to Thakali and Gurung communities. Warm hospitality is one of the reasons why trekkers prefer to plan their next trip to Upper Mustang.
Max Elevation : 3806m.
