Packing for a trip to Iceland can be tricky. The weather is changeable. You might want to go hiking or snorkeling or swimming in a lagoon. It can be overwhelming to think of all the things that you might need. We’ve put together a list of the things that you should bring on any trip to Iceland and lists of what you need in winter versus summer. Use these packing lists then add any special equipment you need for photography or rock climbing or any other adventure and you’re all set.

Essential packing list for any time of the year

  • Waterproof, windproof warm jacket/coat
  • Windproof, waterproof rain pants
  • Waterproof hiking boots
  • Thermal shirts (for layering)
  • Fleece jacket or sweater
  • Warm hat and gloves (it’s chilly even in summer)
  • Scarf
  • Bathing suit
  • Socks, underwear, pajamas, t-shirts, and pants (all the basics)
  • Toiletry kit including all the medications that you take regularly or might need on the trip
  • Toilet paper
  • Plug Adaptor/Power Converter
  • Camera
  • Lightweight travel towel
  • One set of nice clothes for enjoying Reykjavik's nightlife
  • Waterbottle
What to bring in the summer
  • Shorts
  • Tank tops/lightweight t-shirts
  • Thick hiking socks
  • Sunglasses

Also, if you’re planning to camp in the summer, you’ll need a warm sleeping bag (it can get very cold at night), a windproof/waterproof tent, cooking gear, and hand and toe warmers. You can shop for food and a cooler once you arrive.

What to bring in the winter

  • Long, warm parka
  • Fleece-lined leggings/thermals
  • Wool sweaters
  • Thermal wool socks, enough to wear for the entire trip
  • Wool hat and gloves (extra set in case the first set gets wet)
  • Cleats for walking on ice (cleats like Yaktrax attach easily to your boots)
